HRM Experience

I work for a retail store (name I can not disclose) for the last year and a half in Midtown Manhattan. The work environment is great because as an employee I take pride for the organization I work for and its products. Pride is not something everyone has because for a lot of people it is just a job and not a career path. Being an associate in a retail job means that one has to create a comfortable environment for the consumer while engaging the proper product knowledge in order for the consumer to leave satisfied with the desire to return. Not everyone in my job cares about the consumer experience but care about certain discussions with other employees that should be discussed during ones personal time. Many employees at my job tend to slack off and forget the fact that a job is a job which causes a lack of customer service and a negative perspective in the minds of the consumers. My store always tries to create a fun environment for both the employees and the customers by promoting different events that engage both parties.

The best method I believe to fix these issues is creating a different method of selecting individuals during the interview process. Creating different types of questions to be asked during the interview process can let the managers know the kind of personality an individual possesses which will allow them to pick which type of person will benefit the company. Another method is for the company to compensate those individual employees who do their job correctly thus motivating the other employees to thrive for the same goal.

  1. I like the idea of rewarding those who do their job correctly. Incentives for employees should be selective based on performance to create a work environment so that all the employees can strive. I also think that management not only needs to be more selective and create interesting challenges during hiring but also have regular performance appraisals so that employees can voice concerns as can the management. As you have said, some employees slack off or talk about inappropriate subject matters, and such issues need to be addressed. The appraisals would be a great time. I hope you get recognized for your hard work in the current future.

  4. I have also worked in retail and I think your ideas could go a long way. It would be interesting to see what kind of question could be asked in interviews and how they would determine personality types.

  5. I absolutely agree with you that the customer comes first and that the main objective of the organization should be to make the consumers happy which will result in success of the business with increased sales and loyalty. I also can understand how an employee with a poor attitude towards their job can create an unsatisfied environment for the customer and I agree that management should look to correct this problem with their attraction for recruitment processes. It is crucial to find a good person-job fit as well as a person-organization fit. How the consumer sees the employees influences their views of the entire company. It is crucial for the consumer to get the right sense of culture, the culture that management strives for. Making sure to hire employees with the right values and pride in their jobs is definitely the way to go in this situation.
