Motivation

Every individual has a different view of how they perceive their specific job, field and career choice. Some individuals may have the same exact job but may have a different approach to that job depending on their personality and what they want to achieve from this job. If a employee enjoys their job then this will greatly increase the employee's productivity in their performance. In the ancient story, the man who proudly acknowledged that he is helping to build a cathedral has a motive for his job; he understands the importance his job has and will do anything to make it a reality.
I believe the Law of Effect which states that behavior followed by a pleasant consequence is likely to be repeated; behavior followed by an unpleasant consequence is unlikely to be repeated is important for the behavior of an employee. If employees in a corporation are given recognition or their hard work in either a physical manner (bonus money, gift, etc) or in a psychological manner (employee of the month, recognition by their peers, etc) will lead to a repetition of this behavior because the employee would want to continue doing this. If an employee does not get recognition or experience an unpleasant consequence based on a certain behavior then that said behavior will change. Employee's who constantly do their job in the correct manner and do not receive recognition of any kind may feel like they are wasting their time and will decrease their productivity. I believe employers should motivate their employees to increase their level of joy in the work place by increasing different incentives that would allow the employee to increase their level of productivity; happier employees will lead to a happier employer.

Individual Behavior

My future manager would have to understand the individual behavior idea based on the "Big Five" traits concerning agreeableness. It is very important for a manager to understand that a reliable employee is someone who is helpful, trustworthy, courteous and can get along with others. An employee who lacks these traits can not work in an environment where working as a team or in a group is essential.
A manager needs to understand that the traits concerning agreeableness create a better workplace for everyone to be in. If a manager wants to run a successful company then his/her employees would have to be on the same page. An employee who is disruptive, dishonest, skeptical and tough will not create a working environment that flourishes success and self actualization to want to succeed within the company.

Leadership

When it comes down to a leader of one organization becoming a leader in another, the only name that comes into my mind is that of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He achieved a lever of leadership success in religion, in his church where he had many individuals who followed and heard his sermons as a pastor. He became a pastor in Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama when he was only 25 years old.
Civil rights during the 1960's was the point in which minority groups, such as the African America & Latino Americans, fought hard to create a society in which individuals are not judged by the color of their skin. Martin Luther King Jr became a civil rights activist in the 1960's and believed in a non violent approach when protesting unlike other activist groups who believed that violence was the key of power.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr is considered to be an outstanding leader in one organization and became an outstanding leader in another form of an organization. He inspired many individuals in a religious point of view and used that same approach to captivate millions of more people with his speeches and demeanor. Dr. King Jr's time in the church developed an understanding of how to speak and express his views within a large audience and his time as pastor developed the characteristics needed to reel in his audience to believe in  his words. He changed society for the better and created a better society for my generation and the ones to come.

HRM Experience

I work for a retail store (name I can not disclose) for the last year and a half in Midtown Manhattan. The work environment is great because as an employee I take pride for the organization I work for and its products. Pride is not something everyone has because for a lot of people it is just a job and not a career path. Being an associate in a retail job means that one has to create a comfortable environment for the consumer while engaging the proper product knowledge in order for the consumer to leave satisfied with the desire to return. Not everyone in my job cares about the consumer experience but care about certain discussions with other employees that should be discussed during ones personal time. Many employees at my job tend to slack off and forget the fact that a job is a job which causes a lack of customer service and a negative perspective in the minds of the consumers. My store always tries to create a fun environment for both the employees and the customers by promoting different events that engage both parties.

The best method I believe to fix these issues is creating a different method of selecting individuals during the interview process. Creating different types of questions to be asked during the interview process can let the managers know the kind of personality an individual possesses which will allow them to pick which type of person will benefit the company. Another method is for the company to compensate those individual employees who do their job correctly thus motivating the other employees to thrive for the same goal.

Career Planning

There are three career objectives I have for the next five years. I am currently a senior in Baruch and I am in my last semester of my bachelors degree in Management of Musical Enterprise. My first goal is to finish off this semester in a good academic standing and enjoy my graduation festivities. My second goal is to find a job that is related to my field as in a music record company that will lead for a good salary and better way of living. My third goal is to move up the career latter and work for the Latin division of a record label.
In order for my goals to be accomplished I have to recognize my strengths and weaknesses I have. A key strength that I have is the ability to never give up even when the road to my success seems difficult. Another strength that I have is that I have a strong mind and know exactly what it will take for me to succeed. My weakness is that I am very impatient when it comes down to getting these career objectives in motion because I want things to happen at the present but I realize that everything in life takes time.

Plan of Action
 1. In order to finish this semester in a good academic standing I must stay on top of my studies. This will involve a schedule in which I can balance school, work, internship and my personal life.
2. To find a job within my career path I must finish school and my current internship and start applying and looking for jobs, even if its an entry level position that involve just office work. I must be patient and build up my networking skills because my career choice is about who I know and how can these individuals help me achieve my career goals.
3. In order for me to achieve my ideal dream job of working in the Latin division of a record label I must first increase my work experience, understand the business and create the correct contacts that will take to where I want to be.

Crisis Management: 2010 Haiti Earthquake

It was Tuesday, 12th of January, when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred that devastated the country of Haiti. The death estimate was about 316,000 which is considered to be one of the deadliest earthquakes of all time and caused $14 billion. This situation is personal for me because I was in the Dominican Republic visiting my family and felt and experienced the earthquake that shook the whole island of Hispaniola. Haiti lacked a great amount of resources such as food, water and medical equipment to handle the amount of people who were affected by this natural disaster. More information about this earthquake can be found in this CNN report on the Haiti Earthquake

President Obama immediately assembled different U.S. agencies to create a relieve effort to help the Haitian people and country. Supplies were sent from different nations through the Port-au-Prince (Haiti's capital) and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic capital) while different measures were used to help the with this disaster. The first step involved in managing this crisis was to search and assistance with rescuing anyone who is missing or in need; including equipment used to lift heavy item and assisting with medical supplies. The second step was to address the need of medical supplies, shelter, sanitation, food and clean water. Having a poor  sanitation plan of action can increase the death toll because the chance of the spread of diseases and illness can increase dramatically. The third step was setting and maintenance the infrastructure of operations within the country. Information bases on this article: Haiti Earthquake:Crisis and Response

Overall the 2010 Haiti Earthquake did indeed abide by the six rules of crisis management because the necessary steps were used to help the people of Haiti in various ways. Many nations sent help to Haiti but the overall factor of this relief aid was the fact that the necessary steps were taken to solve different problems that involved anything from food, medical and the actual infrastructure of the country in order for the citizens and the country itself to maintain themselves.

Ethics in Action

The ethical dilemma for Mr. Jayaswal is the question of moral ethics and conduct. He creates a large amount of revenue with his investment in the coal mines and flaunts his wealth while his country has severe issues within its infrastructures  He can sell his investment for millions of dollars or sit on his asset while 300 million Indian civilians live without electricity. Mr. Dadra's power in politics allows Mr. Jayaswal, and himself, to prosper with the coal mines in a society that has an open system in which does not limit who can purchase coal fields and does not regulate it. Mr. Dadra's connection with Mr. Jayaswal is a relationship that consist of a large amount of money going into the direction of Mr. Dadra in order for Mr. Jayasawl to continue prospering from the coal fields.

The advantages Mr. Jayaswal has in committing to this action is of course is wealth and power. He lives a luxurious lifestyle in which he flaunts his wealth publicly by creating lavishing weddings and airing them on Indian television.
The disadvantages Mr. Jayswal has is the fear of imprisonment if the investigations do in fact bring to life certain facts that can take him into prison. He may believe that he is ethically helping the people of India but in reality his actions are unethical, as based on Kohlberg's three levels of moral development, is on the preconventional level of self centered behavior in which Mr. Jayswal only cares about his own personal gain instead of the gain of the mass.

Mr. Jayaswal was motivated by the view point of individualist because he makes certain decisions based on how effective those decisions are to his life. He may believe he has an utilitarian viewpoint because he strongly believes his company in indeed helping the people of India and wants his company to have a clean image by cooperating with the investigations that are going on.

Corruption in India will not decrease because the government lacks control over companies and individuals who have a large amount of money. Based on this NY Times the Indian government has lost $34 billion in royalties because they decided to sell coal concessions at discounted prices. This amount of money could have been used to drastically help the 300 million Indian civilians who have no electricity and help the country in various different ways. The government I believe sold these coal concessions at a discounted price because many individuals from the government favored from this by getting personal gains (money).

Another article from the Indian Express states that Anna Hazare, anti corruption activist, wants the people of India to be able to vote for clean candidates and believe that "only the people have the power to transform", believing that the people must take control of the corruption that is going on in India.

Case Study: Zara

Zara International proposes the elements of classical management by implementing the notion of scientific management. Based on the textbook, "this kind of management emphasizes careful selection and training of workers and supervisory support." Zara International gives the consumer the ability to have in their possession different garments that are consistently updated every two weeks. Zara supports its workers by planning and assisting their work by allowing the workers to impact the stores business. The workers track sales which allows Zara to know the items that selling or not.

Operation management is defined in the textbook as "is the study of how organizations produce goods and services". Zara produce goods by tracking sales of certain items and create new products that are sent to different locations when certain garments are not selling.

The notion of contingency thinking consist of the ability for an organization to identify practices that best fit the demands of different and unique situations. Zara has used the technique of consistently updating their inventory to constantly keeping themselves ahead of their competitors. They price their inventory much cheaper than their competition to also create a location in which all social classes are able to purchase items.

Bases on the report: Zara Uses Operations Research to Reengineer its Global Distribution Process the company has analyzed different types of operation management to create a system in which its distribution process will give them an edge against its competition. Complexity and ingenuity in my opinion describe the distribution process of Zara International because of how quickly and reliable the process is and the ability Zara processes to continue using and innovating itself even if the company is expanding into different territories.
